HISTORY: The early history of Tbilisi is a little shady, but archeological findings prove that humans may have inhabited the area as many as 6000 years ago. However, the first history recorded by humans comes only around the 4th century A.D. Over the following 500 years, the city of Tbilisi was occupied and ruled by many of the region’s major powers. During the 12th and early 13th centuries, Tbilisi and Georgia went through what is known as their Golden Age, during which time the country was a major economical power, and was considered the cultural and literary center of the region.
DESCRIPTION: Formerly known as Tiflis, is the capital and the largest city of Georgia, lying on the banks of the Mtkvari River, The architecture in the city is a mixture of local (Georgian), with strong influences of Byzantine, European/Russian (neo-classical), and Middle Eastern styles. In Tbilisi there are many historical monuments, whose age has exceeded more than thousand years , but the oldest is Anchishati - Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It was built in the first half of the VI century.
Sioni Cathedral (XII century). This place is interesting not only as an architectural masterpiece but also as a holy place, which houses several Christian relics. Under its arches you can still see the cross of Saint Nino.

• DESCRIPTION / ROUTE: Departure to Borjomi. Stop in Gori where Joseph Stalin was born, and now there is his museum (excursion). Next visit to "Uplistsihe" - awesome city, founded in the late II millennium BC. This ancient fortress - a fabulous work on the creation of a city from a rock. Cave Town-Fortress Uplistsihe is situated on a rocky massif in 15 km eastwards to town Gori on the left bank of the river Mtkvari. The fortress is mentioned in chronicles from earliest times. Its history begins in the I-II millennium B.C. Uplistsikhe was an important religious, political and cultural centre in the Hellenistic and the late Antique periods (IV c. B.C. - IV c. A.D.). The town was in its heyday as far back as the 9th - 11th centuries. In 13th century, it was ravaged by Mongols. Archaeological excavations have revealed extraordinary artefacts of different epochs: beautiful golden, silver and bronze jewellery, magnificent samples of ceramics and sculptures.

HISTORY: Borjomi is a resort town in south-central Georgia, In the Middle Ages, the area of what is now Borjomi was part of the Tori province. It was populated by a series of forts guarding the strategic crossroad of routes leading to the western, eastern, and southern provinces of Georgia. Three important forts – those of “Gogia”, “Petra”, and “Sali” – still overlook the town from nearby hills. The post-Soviet years of political and economic crisis hindered development of the area, but it remained a popular destination for internal tourism. In the 2000s, a growing government and private investment into tourism and municipal infrastructure helped Borjomi recover.
DESCRIPTION: The climatic health and spa resort Borjomi is situated in the Mtkvari river plain, in the forested valley with the rivers Borjomula and Gujaretistskali. It stretches over an area of more than 600 hectares. Near the town, between the altitude of 850 to 2200 m is located the Borjomi Nature Reserve, where you can meet the oriental spruce, Caucasian fir, pine, beech, oak, hornbeam, elm, and chestnut trees. Borjomi climate is moderately humid with warm and long summers and mild winters. The main treatment at the resort is mineral spring water. Favorable conditions for this treatment are inherent in several Borjomi areas: Likani, Phapha, Plateau.

• MAIN ATTRACTION: Cathedral Svetitskhoveli (XII century) – stands on the site chosen by St. Nino as the place for the first church in Georgia. Situated at the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers, the cathedral was built by architect Arsukidze in the early 11th century and is the place where Georgian kings were crowned and buried. The cathedral is one of the most sacred places in Georgia and the place where Christ’s robe is said to be buried.
Convent Samtavro (XI century) former residence of the lords of Mtskheta is a burial and coronation site of Georgian royal family. The first Christian King, Mirian and his wife Nana are buried in the church. The main building of the complex is the great church of Samtavro. The tiny church of St Nino dates from the 4th c. In the North-west stands a handsome three-storey bell-tower of 13th c. The South-west buildings have functioned both as a nunnery and theological seminary of the Georgian Orthodox Church.
Jvari monastery (V century) The name is translated as the Monastery of the Cross. According to traditional accounts, in the early 4th century Saint Nino stayed here to pray and erected a wooden cross on Mtskheta’s highest hill. The church was built on the crest of a cliff at a confluence of the rivers Mtkvari and Aragvi. It is a representative of the tetraconch architectural type that was popular not only in Georgia but also in Byzantine world. Jvari served as a model for many other churches in the country. Unusual and varied relief sculptures decorate its façades. The importance of Jvari complex increased over time and attracted many pilgrims. According to the legend pilgrims visiting the site shed tears while praying and the nearby natural lake was named the Lake of tears.

For decades, people have gathered under the shadows of the plane trees here, selling mostly old Soviet things like dishes, medals, cameras, watches, old cassettes and music players. You’ll find all kinds of knick-knacks and charming miscellanea at this open-air market – original art, decorative drinking horns and daggers, shaggy hats, accordions, as well as china, glass and silver being sold off by impoverished old folk.
