Bread & Salt Welcoming Ceremony (at the hotel before check-in)

• DESCRIPTION: Bread & Salt ceremony has been there for ages and has been one of the oldest Russian traditions until nowadays. It has been always a sign of true hospitality for very important and respected guests. The thing is that bread in Russia traditionally was the most respected food (there is a saying in Russia ‘Bread is the life’s head2 – analogue of “Bread is the staff of life”), while salt was associated with a long friendship (apart from that, in Russian Empire there was a very high tax for salt, which made this product very expensive, but still Russians always were generous and offered it to their guests).
• The ceremony is the following: when the guests arrive, they are greeted by Russian ladies dressed in national costumes and holding a loaf of bread ("caraway") placed on a "rushnik" (embroidered towel). A salt holder or a salt cellar is placed on top of the bread loaf or secured in a hole on the top of the loaf. Each guest is offered to break off a piece of bread and eat it after putting in salt. The Bread & Salt ceremony is traditionally performed by young women dressed in national costumes. Number of loafs and artists depend on the group size and should be reconfirmed upon request. Recommended as a welcoming ceremony upon arrival to the hotel, restaurant or venue (welcome or gala-dinner). The ceremony can be combined with a welcome glass of vodka. It is also recommended to combine the Ceremony with an acoustic folkloric ensemble performance.
• Interesting fact: When this tradition was observed at the Apollo-Soyuz project, instead of loaf and salt holder, crackers and salt tablets were used in the spaceship.

09:15 Departure from the Hotel

10:00-12:30 Bunker Taganski - Cold War Museum

locate on map
• Excursion "Top Secret" Built in 1951, this super-secret bunker served as the command post, the main artery for communication for the Soviet Union in the event of a nuclear war. It was built to withstand direct hits and insure normal telecommunications in the worst case scenario. You enter from a nonchalant building near the metro Taganskaya. It's so well disguised that I myself have passed by this building many times over a period five years prior to the opening and I never guessed that such a place existed. Upon entry you are issued an id with a picture of yourself in a gas mask. This is just the beginning. You pass by an incredible 6 ton concrete door which slide open to reveal a small set of stairs which go down. And down. And down further. In all 22 flights. (For those not wishing to walk, you can take the elevator). When you reach the bottom you are met by soldiers at a command post who run a Geiger counter over you to see if you are contaminated with radiation.
• Essentially the bunker is a network of tunnels, in all over 7000 square meters. Most are small, but there are 4 large chambers which are 50% larger than the metro tunnels. In one of the chambers there is a film on the Cold War and the origins of the bunker. In another, you can see the communications equipment used during the 1950's. The bunker housed 2500 workers who would work in seven day shifts below ground. The bunker supplied everything they needed, including sleeping quarters, a canteen and bathing facilities. There was also a stockpile of food in the event of a nuclear strike.
• The walk through the tunnels is simply breath-taking and you can get lost in your imagination of what it must have been like 50 years ago. For those fans of Soviet history and the Cold War, this is a must see. Duration: 1 hour. In summer wear something warm (a shawl, jacket, or a scarf) when you go to the bunker, the temperature downstairs is about 17 degrees Celsius, so it can be quite chilly in summer clothes. Opt for the soldier's lunch to complement the unique old time Soviet Union feeling (other types of menus, regular dishes at very good prices are also available upon request).

• LOCATION: Turandot Restaurant is located in Tverskoy boulevard, in the very center of Moscow. It is a true luxury palace, all the interiors of which are hand-made. Here is mosaic gold and antiques, majestic chandelier of Malaysian crystal with unique lightning and acting fireplaces, Gobelin tapestries and Venetian mirrors – and everything is genuine! The details of interior have been made for 6 years and brought from China, France, Italy and other countries. The restaurant has got 14 halls of totally 20 thousand sq. m. and amazing summer terrace, which copies Versailles grounds! The tables boast china-ware - the XVIII century original copies.
• TYPE OF CUISINE: The local menu was elaborated by Alan Yau, the only chef, who was awarded with two Michelin stars for Asian cuisine. But restaurant's menu is not limited only by Asian cuisine (which is, by the way, adopted to European traditions) - a wide choice of European dishes is available and represented by one of the best French chefs with 3 Michelin stars. Talking about local food, a dish in Turandot is more than just a food - it is a true culinary masterpiece. Not to mention an excellent service.
• SPECIAL NOTES: The total capacity of the restaurant is around 500 pax depending on the set up.
The first floor fits up to 150 pax; second floor - 120 pax; the Japanese hall - 75-80 pax; the Grand room - 40-50 pax. Live music (harp, violin, cello, piano) - a spectacular peformance, consisting of classic and modern songs - can be watched and listened on the turning round podium every evening (two casts of quartet are changing during the week). Charming ladies start to play at 19.30. Open from 12:00 until 00:00. All major credit cards are accepted.

Gala dinner at Historical Museum (on Red Square)

locate on map
• DESCRIPTION: Warm Russian Welcome Dinner at the State Historical Museum is the perfect choice to start your Grand Moscow Tour. Located on the Red Square it can be called the real heart of the city, after the Kremlin of course! We recommend to take a short Red Square evening walk before dinner to enjoy the views of the historical center in evening illumination. The red-brick palace topped with a silver roof was built to commemorate the national history, and traces the development of Russia and its people from ancient times to the present. It is also a unique venue for a gala-dinner or a cocktail that can be organized in the Main Entrance Hall with a choir performance (upon request). Architectural proportions of the Main Entrance Hall and its painting create the interior of the medieval Russia. Full length portraits are painted on the canvas and pasted on the priming. Sixty eight figures of princes, tsars and emperors are placed on the branches of the symbolic genealogical tree.
TECHNICAL FEATURES: The total area of Main Entrance Hall is 400 sq. m. with maximum capacity of 100 pax (10 tables of 10 pax) for a banquet, including 2 balconies on the left and right sides of the hall (2 tables of 10 pax per each side). Capacity of the ground floor is 60 persons (6 tables of 10 pax). Welcome cocktail can be organized either at the Hall of the Museum or at Polovetskiy Courtyard with a separate side entrance and cloakroom, where the famous Lenin's Rolls-Royce is behind the glass showcase.
• SPECIAL NOTES: Smoking allowed in all the halls of the Museum. The Museum has a parking which can be provided for the use during event upon a request (the cars must depart not later than by 23:30). NB: To guarantee access, it is necessary to provide the detailed information on the transport vehicles.
• RP RECOMMENDATIONS: Good for Old Russia themes, will be remembered as the highlight of the trip, due to its location at Red Square and unique historic atmosphere reigning inside.
