- Actors/Artists: Bread & Salt Ceremony

• BACKGROUND: The Traditional Russian Welcome Ceremony with Russian Bread Karavay & Salt. This is one of the oldest Russian traditions in the countryside to greet dear guests with freshly baked bread and the precious salt. It originated as a folk custom in western Russia. As a sign of hospitality, when the emperor or empress visited their towns, merchants and gentry would present a loaf of bread placed on a round dish covered with an embroidered towel. A cellar of salt was placed on top of the bread or set in a hole cut into the top of the bread. The ceremony also was used prior to the marriage of a landowner when he traveled to each village on his estate, introducing his new bride to the peasants. The ceremony symbolized that the couple would never be without the necessities of life. Nowadays, it is popular to welcome official guests while national festivities, government receptions, openings of new exhibition and entertainment centers. It is interesting to note that upon his return to Russia on May 27, 1994, Alexander Solzhenitsyn was greeted with the traditional bread and salt.

Its three parks occupy the area of 600 ha, on which over 100 architectural constructions rise: from magnificent palaces and grand monuments to intimate pavilions and park sculptures. In the 17th century there was a Finnish farm here at Dudorovsky eminence called "Saari mois" in Finnish language. In 1708 it became a possession of the Russian Czar, and the Finnish toponymy word "Saari mois" was transformed into "Czarskaya Mysa" that sounded more Russian. In 1708-1724 Czarskaya Mysa was the residence of Peter the Great's wife, the Empress Catherine I. From 1741 Czarskoye Zelo became the residence of the Empress Elizabeth and during her reign the architect Rastrelli created a magnificent Imperial Palace, a brilliant masterpiece of Russian baroque. The existing palace was built between 1744 and 1756 by architects Zemtsov, Kvasov, Chevakinskiy, Rastrelli, Cameron, Quarenghi, Monighetti, Stasov. In the years 1811 - 1843 the Czarskoselsky Lyceum was established there, an elite school for noble families offspring's, where the great Russian poet A.S. Pushkin was educated. - Horse sledge ride in Pavlovsk Park

locate on map
• The Russian Troika appeared in the 18th century with the development of postal service. It quickly became popular for high speed, fatigue endurance, good cargo capacity and good maneuverability. Three-horse teams transported couriers, mail and passengers and the horses were harnessed to sleighs, wagons and carts but never to coaches. Foreigners who tried riding a troika, all said that the experience was unforgettable for the breath-taking speed of such a dashing ride. The Russian troika, incarnating the generous Russian soul and nature, turned into a symbol of Russia.
• The Russian troika was compared to a musical instrument. A traditional three-horse team boasted more than 100 bells — on the bridle, on the saddle and inside the many harness brushes. Each bell sounded different thanks to the skillful masters, who made the ringing tones minor and major.
After the tour around the museum, the harnessed horses will wait the group to take around the picturesque Pavlovsk park and to bring to the Restaurant for the lunch.
• The ride takes about 15 - 20 minutes. Before the Troikas a shot of vodka with sushki (dried cookies) may be served (supplement). At one and the same time maximum 30 pax may participate in the Troika Horse ride int he park. The itinerary of riding may be changed due to the weather conditions in the park.
