******Kamchatka*****

Kamchatka is without exaggeration one of the most spectacular regions in Russia. It occupies the area of 470,000 sq. km, which equals the size of France, Belgium and Luxembourg combined, and separates the Sea of Okhotsk from the Pacific Ocean.
One should not confuse Kamchatka with Siberia; this name is used for the peninsula itself and the closest part of the continent, including Karaginsky Island and the Komandorsky Archipelago.
The mountain ridges - Sredinny, Valaginsky, Ganalsky and Kumroch - stretch from the north to the south giving the peninsula the shape of a giant fish. There are more than 160 volcanoes on the peninsula (29 of them are active), due to the fact that it lies on the Great Pacific “ring of fire”. Volcanoes and volcanic peaks, cyclones and underground heat created here a mixture of twenty climate zones and a great variety of flora and fauna.
But the main attractions of Kamchatka are volcanic calderas, stone sculpture “parks” and lakes in craters, geysers and mineral springs, all in pristine condition.

****** Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Description*****

locate on map
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is the main city and the administrative, industrial, scientific, and cultural center of Kamchatka. Population is 198,028.
The city is situated on high hills and surrounded by volcanoes. In fact, the horizon cannot be seen clearly from any point of town as volcanoes and mountains are everywhere. Across Avacha Bay from the city is Russia's largest submarine base, the Rybachiy Nuclear Submarine Base, established during Soviet times and still used by the Russian Navy. The city is located 6766 km (4204 miles) from Moscow, taking about 9 hours for direct flight.
Petropavlovsk was founded by Danish navigator in the service of the Russina Navy Vitus Bering. Bering reached Avacha Bay on July 10, 1740 and laid the foundation stone for the harbor town, naming the new settlement "Petropavlovsk" (Peter + Paul) after his two ships, the St. Peter and the St. Paul, built in Okhotsk for his second expedition. The town's location on the sheltered Avacha Bay and at the mouth of the Avacha River saw it develop to become the most important settlement in Kamchatka.
Petropavlovsk was a great source of fish, particularly salmon and crab meat for the Soviet Union in the 20th century. Since the end of the Soviet era fishing rights have also been granted to
The city has developed a tourist infrastructure. About twenty large tourism companies offer a wide range of services from bear hunting to paragliding. No roads connect the Kamchatka Peninsula to the rest of the world. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is the second largest city in the world that cannot be reached by road after Iquitos, Peru. Travel to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is expensive but is growing in popularity because of the remarkable scenery throughout the peninsula. The city is served by Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Airport.

******How to get Kamchatka & Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky*****

For those coming from Europe, the most straightforward way to access Kamchatka is via Moscow. Both Aeroflot and Domodedovo Airlines fly direct, non-stop daily from Moscow to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. This `great circle' 7500km (4687 mile) flight spans nine time zones.
The fastest and easiest route for those flying from North America is via Anchorage, Alaska on the Russian airline Magadan Air.
It is also possible to access Kamchatka through Japan, Hong-Kong, China or Korea, linking with feeder flights from Khabarovsk or Vladivostok in southeastern Russia by Korean Air and Vladivostok Air Flights.
It not possible to get to Kamchatka by regular ocean going passenger vessels except on a cruise

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky City Sightseeing Tour (3 hours)

locate on map
During this three-hour excursion in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, guests will be able to visit a number of important historical and cultural monuments, as well as visit the main history museum. They will enjoy stunning panoramas of Avacha Bay and its environs from Petrovskaya Hill. The City, which is only 260 years old, has already had an exciting and diverse history. Through exhibits at the museum, guest will learn about the famous sea explorers Vitus Bering, La Perouse, Charles Clerke, and others, as well as view clothing, utensils and even parts of the original ships from those eras. Further exhibits at the museum will teach them about the natural history of the peninsula, the life of the indigenous people, and the history of its exploration.
The foundation of the city is related to 1740 when the Commandor Vitus Bering decided to set up a base in the Avacha bay. The expedition aimed to cross the Pacific ocean to the unknown shores of the future Russian America.
So, a new settlement appeared in the Avacha bay on the shores of the haven of St.Apostles - St. Paul and St. Peter which were the names of 2 ships participating in the famous Second Kamchatka expedition.
Since its foundation it turned into the capital of the whole peninsula - Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky-city. The Avacha bay was chosen as a base for the Pacific expedition deliberately: all the seamen visiting it, confirm that the Avacha bay is one of the fascinating and spacious havens in the world. The 260-year history of Petropavlovsk experienced ups and downs.
Since the first days of its foundation construction activities have been carried out and even in 1741 Krasheninnikov S. wrote that Petropavlovsk consisted of "decent houses with perfect exterior and a church for the Kamchatka expedition participants". However, after the 1743 edict about the completion of the Second Kamchatka expedition under the command of Vitus Bering Petropavlovsk was about to finish its impetuous development and only thanks to its convenient location - it was an intermediate base between Okhotsk (the famous ship construction town) and the northern fishing Pacific regions Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky didn't stop its existence.
Kamchatka area is unique and fascinating. This is the land of volcanoes which are abundant here - extinct, active, constantly fuming.

16:00 19:00 - 18:00 Avacha bay Boat Tour (2 hours)

locate on map
The impression of Kamchatka could be incomplete if you have not had a look from a seaside. You’ll have this chance. We provide 2 hours boat cruising of Avacha bay which is considered to be one of the most beautiful places all over the world.
Avacha Bay is situated on the Pacific coast of the peninsula. It cuts into the land for 20 km and is considered to be one of the most beautiful and efficient sea harbors in the world. Avacha Bay is vast, well protected from dangerous seas and weather, but also convenient for travel to and from the open seas of the North Pacific. At the end of the 18th century the famous Russian explorer Sarychev wrote: "There is no need to praise its position. It is widely known that it is considered the best in the world as created by nature." The same opinion was held and expressed by the participants of the famous Russian round-the-world expeditions of 19th century. In the middle of the 19th century, the governor-general of Eastern Siberia wrote "I have seen a lot of ports in Russia and Europe, but I have never seen anything of the kind of Avacha Bay". Avacha Bay has a basically round shape and presents a vast and deep closed gulf connected to the Pacific by a narrow strait. Its area is 215 sq.km. The bay coast is winding, cut with numerous inlets of which the most convenient and famous are Tarya, Tikhaya, Rakovaya, Babya, Petropavlovskaya, Seroglazka and Mokhovaya. They are separated from the bay with long sand spits. The shores of Avacha bay are of volcanic origin and have mountainous character. In the west, two very picturesque rivers discharge into the bay: the Avacha and the Paratunka. The bay influences the climate of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, making it warmer than more inland areas in the south. Its coastal waters are warmer than the air all the year round with the exception of July, August and September. In July of 1997, an extraordinary event happened here. Avacha Bay is a place that is usually used by transiting salmon species on the way to spawning in the rivers. This particular year, however, humpback salmon chose Avacha bay itself for spawning. The spit in the city center was crowded with people taking advantage of the cornucopia of salmon... some even fished with just their hands, as the fish were so numerous. The flora and fauna behind the urban areas along the Bay show great variety. On the slopes of hills, in the dells and on mountain rims there are birch trees, elfin cedar and alder growing as well as ash trees and different grasses. As for large marine mammals, one can see large numbers of Largha seals and sea lions. There are many ducks and geese, seagulls and other bird species. On Avacha Bay, if one is lucky, one can see bears, foxes and other animals foraging along the shores.

Guests taste Itelmen cuisine: fish soup, telno (fish cutlets), herbal tea.
The program takes approximately 2hr.30m. plus 2 hours for transportation.
The Itelmen is one of the least populous but one of the most ancient peoples of the North. The earliest known archaeological sight of the Itelmen presence on Kamtchatka peninsula is 5200 years old. “Itelmen” (means “the living”) first came to contact with Russians in XVII century. In 1697 the total known number of Itelmen were 12680 and in the year 1738 - the number dropped down to 8448 people. The causes for that were the disease brought by Russians, forcible assimilation and the colonial Russian policies in general. The Itelmen language is quite unique and although some scientists believe it to be a part of the North-Eastern group of Pale-Asian languages, it has almost no similarities with the Chukchi or Koriak languages. Traditionally Itelmen were the river fishermen and gatherers. Hunting and sea fishing played secondary role in their lives. Until the Soviets, the Itelmen lived in the extended family communities. These communities that were blood related lived alongside the same rivers and shared the fishing grounds.
