History of the Airport
The air transportation infrastructure in Tyumen began to grow rapidly from the moment of discovery of oil deposits in September 1953 and the first large scale oil deposits in July of 1960. Due to the absence of an adequate road system in northern Tyumen at that time, the production of oil and natural gas deposits became dependant on the development an air transportation infrastructure. In record time a new airport in Tyumen was constructed, which could accommodate heavy airplane like the An-22, An-12, for the transportation of "national-economic" loads to the Far North. The An-22 and An -12 were based at the airport for the transportation of passengers. The Tu-134 was added to the fleet in 1972.
On the 15th of May, 1968, by order of the Ministry of Aviation, the second Tyumen unified air detachment was created leading to the formation of a standard airport complex. In the 1970`s the exploitation of polar natural gas and oil deposits and the entire process moves northwards as new towns are built via air roads which begin at Tyumen`s "Roshino" airport. In this period 1,5 million passengers pass through " Roshino" airport yearly. In today's economic situation, the amount of passengers is 5 times less.
The Airport today

Bread and Salt welcome ceremony

Bread & Salt ceremony takes its roots in centuries back, being one of the oldest Russian traditions until nowadays. It has been always a sign of a true hospitality for very important and respected guests, as bread in Russia traditionally was the most respected food, while salt was associated with a long friendship (apart from that, in Russian Empire there was a very high tax for salt, which made this product very expensive). The ceremony looks as the following: when the guests arrive, they are presented with a loaf of bread ("karavay") placed on a "rushnik" (embroidered towel). A salt holder or a salt cellar is placed on top of the bread loaf or secured in a hole on the top of the loaf. Each guests is offered to break off a piece of bread and eat it after putting in a salt. The Bread & Salt ceremony is traditionally presented by young women dressed in national costumes. Number of loafs and artists depend on group size and should be reconfirmed upon request. Recommended as a welcoming ceremony upon arrival to the hotel, restaurant or venue (welcome or gala-dinner). The ceremony can be combined with a welcome glass of vodka. It is also recommended to combine the Ceremony with an acoustic folkloric ensemble performance.
Interesting fact: When this tradition was observed at the Apollo-Soyuz project, instead of loaf and salt holder, crackers and salt tablets were used in the spaceship
