*** Ukraine

Ukraine is the state in Eastern Europe, which in the north borders on Belarus, in the north and east on the Russian Federation, in the west on Poland, Slovakia, in the south-west on Hungary, Romania, and Moldova, and in the south it is washed by the Black Sea and Sea of Azov.
The total area of Ukraine is 603,700 sq. km. The population of Ukraine is 50 million. The area spanned in the west-east direction is 1300 km, from north to south 900 km.
The longest river of Ukraine is the Dnipro, which is 2201 km long, of which 981 km flows down trough Ukraine. The largest mountain system in Ukraine is the Carpathian Mountains that extend for more than 270 km and are 100-110 km wide. The highest mount is Hoverla (2061 m).
Ukraine's climate is moderately continental; at the southern coast of Crimea it can be described as subtropical of the Mediterranean type. Summers are mostly warm and dry, and winters are usually mild and west. The average temperature in January is -7 Centigrade and in July +19 Centigrade.
The system of Ukrainian subdivisions reflects the country's status as a unitary state (as stated in the country's constitution) with unified legal and administrative regimes for each unit.
Ukraine is subdivided into twenty-four oblasts (provinces) and one autonomous republic (avtonomna respublika), Crimea. Additionally, the cities of Kiev, the capital, and Sevastopol, both have a special legal status. The 24 oblasts and Crimea are subdivided into 490 raions (districts), or second-level administrative units. The average area of a Ukrainian raion is 1,200 square kilometres (460 sq mi); the average population of a raion is 52,000 people.
Urban areas (cities) can either be subordinated to the state (as in the case of Kiev and Sevastopol), the oblast or raion administrations, depending on their population and socio-economic importance. Lower administrative units include urban-type settlements, which are similar to rural communities, but are more urbanized, including industrial enterprises, educational facilities, and transport connections, and villages.
According to the Constitution, the state language of Ukraine is Ukrainian. Russian, which was the de facto official language of the Soviet Union, is widely spoken, especially in eastern and southern Ukraine. According to the 2001 census, 67.5 percent of the population declared Ukrainian as their native language and 29.6 percent declared Russian.[107] Most native Ukrainian speakers know Russian as a second language.

*** Yalta Description

locate on map
Yalta (Ukrainian and Russian: Ялта, Crimean Tatar: Yalta) is a city in Crimea, southern Ukraine, on the north coast of the Black Sea. The city is located on the site of an ancient Greek colony, said to have been founded by Greek sailors who were looking for a safe shore (γιαλος - yalos in Greek) on which to land. It is situated on a deep bay facing south towards the Black Sea, surrounded by wooded mountains. It enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate with many vineyards and orchards in the vicinity.
The term "The Greater Yalta" is used to designate a part of the Crimean southern coast spanning from Foros in the west to Gurzuf in the east and including the city of Yalta and multiple adjacent urban settlements. The existence of Yalta was first recorded in the 12th century by an Arab geographer, who described it as a Byzantine port and fishing settlement. It became part of a network of Genoese trading colonies on the Crimean coast in the 14th century, when it was known as Etalita or Galita.
During the 20th century Yalta was the principal holiday resort of the Soviet Union. In 1920, Lenin issued a decree "On the Use of Crimea for the Medical Treatment of the Working People" which endorsed the region's transformation from a fairly exclusive resort area into a recreation facility for tired proletarians. Numerous workers' sanatoria were constructed in and around Yalta.

Chehov museu

Anton Chekhov's museum and tasting the pies and cherry home-made wine prepared ny Chkhov's recepies.
The tour includes a visit to the museum of the Russian writer Anton Pavlocich Chekhov in the writer's house in Yalta (the inside visit lasts for 50 minutes). Chekhov's friend and fellow-playwright Maxim Gorky wrote "in that sad and gentle smile one felt the subtle skepticism of a man who knows the value of words and dreams..."
Anton Chekhov was born in Moscow and originally trained as a doctor but it is as a playwright that he is known worldwide. When he became ill with tuberculosis in 1897 he decided to spend sometime in Yalta because the air was said to be beneficial for the condition. He was not alone in this; at the nearby Livadia Palace, summer home to the Romanovs, "Sunny Walk" was created in the grounds for the benefit of Nicholas II who was also "consumptive". In fact the Crimea is dotted with "sanatoria" many of which belonged to Russian firms who would send their workers where for subsidised holidays each summer. Chekhov himself funded the establishment of a sanatorium in Yalta that now bears his name.
Chekhov actually had two properties in the area. The first was one he bought in the picturesque seaside suburb of Hurzuf, a quaint place that these days attracts artists and other bohemian types.
When Chekhov died in 1904 he bequeathed the house to his sister, Masha, and when the Communists took power in 1917, it was turned into a "dom-musei" , literally a "house museum". When the Germans invaded the Crimea during the Second World War, Masha hung a sign saying "cholera" on the door to prevent the Nazis from looting the house. As a result, what visitors see today are the original furnishings and household items that were there when Chekhov lived there.
- After mueseum visit, you'll taste the pies and the cherry home-made wine after the Chekhovs' receipt. Tasting is accompanied with a concert of the Russian romances.
In commemoration of this visit the guests are presented with the Diploma stamped with the writer's original seal.

Khersoness tour

For almost two millenium has this city on the Crimean shore existed. It was called Khersone Taurical (from the Greek 'Khersonesus'- a peninsular) In 422-421 B.C. it was founded by Heracliots - who had come from the south Black Sea coast city Heraclea - on the coast of the Karantinnaya bay.
In a century Khersones turned into one of the biggest - the City-State of the Northern Black Sea Region. Politically it was a slave-holding republic with the democratic form of governing, and its social-economic function was to be a center of trade, handicraft and culture. Its population has reached 20 thousand people.
Since the 5th century A.D. Khersones has been a member of Bysantine Empire. In 988, after a 9-months siege, the city (the Russsian name of which is Corsun) was conquered by Prince Vladimir. Here Vladimir has adopted Christianity.
At the end of the 12-14 century Khersones suffered from the Tatar Hordes attackes twice. In the middle of the 15th cent. the city stopped existing. In 1472 genuesus consul in Kaffa (Feodosia) called it 'an uninhabited place'.
At present there is a Khersones historical-archeological preserve at its place (the territory of Sevastopol). While visiting the museum one can see the ruins of an antique theatre - the only one in our country, - the city blocks, an area of defensive walls with the Zenone Tower and many other interesting architectural constructions.

10:00 14:00 - 14:00 The tour to Bakhchesaray

The small town of Bakhchisaray brings you face to face with the Tatar era of Crimean's past. From the 15th century until 1783, Bakhchisaray was the seat of the Crimean khans, the last westward bastion of the descendants of Jenghiz Khan 's hordes. From 1475, Crimean Tatars were vassals of the Ottoman Empire. The Tatar khan's palace was built by Russian and Ukrainian slaves in the 16th century under the direction of Persian, Ottoman, and Italian master builders. Inside the main mosque, which dated from 1740, there is a nice wooden minbar (pulpit) and carved mihrabs (prayer niches facing Mecca). An interesting Chufut-Kale fortress and the nearby the cavern town were built in the 6th-10th centuries by the multiethnic populations which lived there.
Cavern towns are part of a defense structure enclosed with powerful fortification walls with towers, caves, impregnable casemates and natural obstacles such as abrupt forbidding cliffs. In ancient times, it was dangerous to live in fertile and convenient valleys, since the Crimean peninsula suffered from the constant raids of nomadic tribes. The caves contained also monks cells, churches, sacristies, burial vaults and other cult and husbandry premises.
