GENERAL: Skopje description

Skopje is the capital of the Republic of Macedonia; it is in the Povardarie region, and is the largest and most diverse city in the country. Skopje has been occupied by many different peoples since its foundation. This is evidenced by the several Byzantine churches and monasteries around the city, also by a few Roman sites, such as Scupi and Skopje's Aqueduct. However, the group that left the greatest mark on Skopje were the Ottomans. The Ottomans ruled Macedonia for hundreds of years and built a large number of mosques and other buildings.
Today, Skopje is becoming a modern city. Home to about quarter of the entire population of the country, it is also home to many different types of people. Besides the majority Macedonians, many Albanians, Turks, Roma, Serbs, Bosniaks and others call Skopje home.

Explore Macedonia's charming capital city!
On this panoramic tour of Skopje, you will see all the main attractions in Macedonia's capital city such as Fortress Kale, the Parliament of the Republic of Macedonia, the Gate Macedonia (a newly built triumphal arch located on Pella Square), and the cathedral church of St. Clement of Ohrid.
You will also see the Government of RM, the Bridge Gotse Delcev, the Museum of the Holocaust, the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle for Independence, as well as a replica of the Macedonian National Theater destroyed in the earthquake in 1963.
Get to see also the Macedonian National Theater (built in the 1970s), the National and University Library, the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Church of the Holy Mother of God, the National Bank of RM, and the Old Railway Station which houses the Museum of the City of Skopje.
After this we will drive to Mountain Vodno, and then ride the cable car to get to the top where the Millennium Cross is located at an altitude of 1066 m.

- Visit to Memorial House of Mother Teresa

In anticipation of the 100th anniversary of her birth in the presence of a large number of foreign and domestic visitors in January 2009, was promoted Memorial house of Mother Teresa. This is the place where the old Catholic Churchwas before the earthquake in 1963. It was the place where Gonxha was baptized as a baby and where she used to sing in the church quire as a girl. This place had a great importance and influence on developing of the character of young Gonxha and to her desire to help the poor people. The place where the house is represents a symbolic bridge that connects little Gonxha to one of the greatest humanitarian of the world, Mother Teresa.

- Visit to Holy Savior (Sv. Spas) Church

The church Holy Savior was built in the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century, after the fire in 1689 that burned much of the city.
You can enter the church through a few stone stairs. Is a three-nave church with middle nave is arc vaulted, and the sides are flat and covered with planks. In the western part of the church was constructed gallery for women.
During the nineteenth century, the church got its definite interior look. In 1824 were completed the iconostasis and icons, and in 1867 was made part of the throne icons. For performing the iconostasis and icons, craft guilds and merchants from Skopje made a large contribution.
Church Holy Salvation in Skopje is known for its iconostasis, made in deep carving from 1819 to 1824, from woodcarving group of Petre Filipovski "Garka" with his brother Marko and makarie (Macarius) Frckovski from village Galichnik. At the right end of the iconostasis of the south side are represented the authors Petre Filipovski as working out a plan, and the other two holding in their hands hammers and chisels.
